The S5 Max is a combined robot cleaner and mop from Roborock, a firm that Xiaomi owns around one-quarter of. The brand’s early robot vacuums operated with Xiaomi’s Mi Home app, but there is now a distinct Roborock app that is nicely designed and simple to use.

We’ve examined a variety of Roborock cleaners, including the S6 and S6 Max V, both of which we recommend.

Although the S5 Max isn’t the most recent, powerful, or feature-rich handset in the lineup, it’s far from simple. In reality, it’s a fantastic all-around robot vacuum with every cleaning option imaginable.

One of its selling features is its enormous water tank (for a robot vacuum, anyhow – 290ml is still little in actual terms) and configurable mopping settings, which allow you to select mopping zones and pick how much water the S5 Max needs to clean.

However, if you’re looking for a decent value robot vacuum, and even if you don’t intend to use its mop function on a regular basis, it should be a contender for your money.

It has now been reduced to a reasonable price, and if you can get it when it’s on sale, you’ll be doing very well indeed.

Roborock S5 Max: Design and Setup

The S5 Max features a distinctive robot vacuum cleaner design. It’s disc-shaped and comes in black or white, with a raised Lidar tower in the center. It includes a single spinner on one side that collects hair and fluff and allows the robot to clean all the way to the room’s edge.

Unfortunately, the spinner attracts hairs, which wrap around it and must be taken off from time to time. It’s not an enjoyable job.

The S5 Max is less than 10cm tall, which is very ordinary for a robot vacuum.

Still, if you’re thinking about getting a robot vacuum, we recommend measuring the clearance height under your large pieces of furniture in your home. You’ll be disappointed if it can’t clean under the sofa, and even more so if it can but keeps getting stuck.

It is simple to set up. Follow the on-screen directions, and once the S5 Max is online, you can choose how it cleans. You may also utilize voice commands and schedule cleaning by connecting to your Alexa. In the app, there’s even a tutorial on how to connect.

You may save a map of your house and then use it to indicate no-go areas, areas for deep cleaning, and rooms (or portions of rooms) for mopping. This means you can fill the water reservoir and design a cleaning schedule such that the S5 Max mops your kitchen floor but not your bedroom carpet. You can save up to three maps, each for a separate floor or area of your house.

Roborock S5 Max: Performance

The S5 Mac can vacuum and mop at the same time, but in actuality, it’s more like a good vacuum with a short wipe down after.

The suction settings on the S5 Max include quiet, balanced, turbo, and max. It has a noise level of 58 decibels. On the quiet option, being in the same room isn’t too bothersome, but if you’re watching TV, it will still make it difficult to hear the dialogue. In any event, one of the best features of a robot vacuum is the ability to schedule it to work while you are not around.

However, the effectiveness of this is dependent on a number of things. One is your way of life. If you have a lot of stuff on your floors (kick-off shoes, wire nests), the S6 Max V, which can recognize and avoid objects, would be a better choice.

Allowing the robot vacuum to vacuum in your absence necessitates that it be able to move around without collapsing on lampstands and doorway thresholds. Some robot vacuum cleaners are better than others at this.

The good news is that the S5 is a capable climber who shouldn’t require much assistance. It only got stuck once during the testing period, and it was in a devilish snare between a cabinet that caught it from above and a wire that coiled around its cleaning spinner. It easily handled a 2cm high door threshold that was wide enough to beach several of its competitors.

Its suction (up to 2,000 Pa) is more than adequate for hardwood floors and, on one of the higher settings, for carpet. However, keep in mind that while it will remove fluff and surface crumbs from the carpet, it will not remove embedded filth from carpets or shaggy rugs.

You’ll get a maximum of 2.5 hours of cleaning time, but a higher power setting will deplete the battery considerably faster. I was easily able to clean my entire apartment on a single charge, despite the fact that it is all hard flooring.

Roborock S5 Max: Mopping

What about its mopping function? The S5 Max has more mopping choices than most robot vacuums and is simple to use. Simply fill the reservoir, clip on the mop bracket, and it will go into mopping mode immediately. There are three water level options to pick from (plus a no-water option), and I discovered that using the highest yielded the best results.

The mop function on the S5 Max is the greatest. I tested it in a dual-function robot vacuum, but – here’s the kicker – it’s still not terrific. It’s not overly effective, but it will leave your floor looking much better, with a great sheen. It cannot, however, scrape a floor to remove a tea stain.

Because the bin itself is just 460ml, I would want additional space inside the machine for a larger dustbin. To be fair, the 290ml water reservoir takes up very little space and may be beneficial to some.

Roborock S5 Max: Price and availability

The Roborock S5 Max can be found at a variety of stores. There are several places to buy in the UK, but My Robot Centre has the greatest deal, offering a model in either black or white for £379. As a result, it is a very reasonably priced robot vacuum.

In the United States, it is available at Roborock, Amazon, and Wal-Mart. All options are available on the Roborock website. At the time of writing, the lowest choice is on Wal-Mart, where you can get it in either black or white for $379.99. It’s unclear whether this is a limited-time promotion, so act quickly if you’re interested. You’ll pay $549.99 if you buy from Amazon or Roborock.
